On Being Empathetic
I’ll be honest, I’m not naturally empathetic. I look at those who are and notice how people gravitate to them and people talk highly of their character when they’re not in the room. Empathy is not just an emotional trait that helps with social interactions, it’s a way to better communicate before focusing on action. At work, the perception is to bias towards action but the reality is a greater understanding comes from an empathetic response to truly understand a situation. Here are four ways to improve your empathy.
Ask open-ended questions: Encourage deeper conversation by asking questions like "How did that make you feel?" or "Can you tell me more about that experience?"
Put yourself in their shoes: Before reacting, pause and try to imagine how you would feel in the other person’s situation.
Observe body language: Pay attention to non-verbal cues like facial expressions, posture, and tone of voice to better understand others’ emotions.
Avoid making assumptions: Don’t jump to conclusions about what others are feeling—ask for clarification and listen to their point of view.
🏥 Company Spotlight 🏥 → Cancer AI Alliance
Who Is The Cancer AI Alliance?
Not a company but an alliance of organisations that have come together to pursue AI applications in cancer prevention and treatment.
Why Are They In The Spotlight?
The recently agreed partnership brings together Fred Hutchinson, Johns Hopkins, Dana Farber and Sloan Kettering, as well as Madroa who have put up $40m in capital.
What Are They Getting Right?
I believe AI is the greatest opportunity to significantly reverse cancer in society. Across early detection, imaging and treatment AI plays a transformative role.
The groups all understand the potential of AI but really emphasise that potential cannot be met when expertise, data and information are all siloed and hidden among each institution. By coming together they all stand a better chance of making a meaningful impact through the utilisation of AI
What Can You Learn From Them?
Collaboration. This partnership is bringing together some of the best minds in cancer research, treatment and technology. These are the kinds of partnerships that inspire new ideas and accelerate promising solutions. Being smart about who you collaborate with and why is one of the biggest determinants of your organisation’s success.
🖼️ Infographic Of The Week 🖼️
So I’ll be honest, I was surprised by this.
Anecdotally almost everyone I’ve spoken to (I appreciate my demographic skews under 50) has received medical advice from AI. They also hate the requirement of long phone calls with long waiting times. They also have all seen examples of image-based AI successfully finding problems Doctors have missed.
I’m confident this data will effectively flip in the next two years.
More use cases and evidence will show safety and effectiveness. Greater integration will happen across healthcare. Broader attitudes towards AI will improve as it permeates other areas of our lives.
Yes, healthcare is slow but I’m confident AI is different. Demand plus financial upside is clear.
Do you agree?
❔ Question Of The Week ❔
What strategic partnerships are you forming now that will exponentially amplify your market influence and access over the next decade?
What’s My Answer You (Didn’t) Ask?
Clearly a theme for this week, strategic partnerships are definitely underrated from a business growth perspective. There’s an aversion to forming close partnerships with other organisations as it means external forces have a greater outcome on your business.
What I believe is missed is that partnerships can be a relationship, not a marriage. Don’t tie yourself in knots trying to overcomplicate the partnership, simply identify the most optimal reason for collaboration and then deliver exceptionally well on that one reason. If the partnership yields nothing of significance then move on. If you are disappointed the project and partnership are over then that’s your sign to double down and form a longer partnership.
Your Answer?
